I began writing Stargate fanfiction in May 2003. Some might think it a little presumptuous of me to write Stargate fanfiction after being a fan of the show for such a short time. Some might. Not me. I fell in love with all of the characters -- Jack O'Neill, the ruggedly handsome, brave, stalwart soldier; Daniel Jackson, the incredibly gorgeous, brilliant, angst-ridden orphan and soon-to-be widower archaeologist; Sam Carter, the equally brilliant and beautiful astrophysicist; and Teal'c, the sultry-voiced Jaffa who turned his back on his own kind in order to save them. These are characters whose pathos and humor, sorrow and insanity, bravery and bravado is so human. They are only slightly larger than life -- everyday people with everyday lives but not so everyday jobs. I mean, saving the world, sometimes the galaxy, on a weekly basis isn't your average, run-of-the-mill way to earn a paycheck. These guys love what they do, but even more important, they love one another. They are friends, they are family. Their dedication to one another is above and beyond that of ordinary friends. They are stellar examples of the best of mankind. I for one am glad they're out there protecting us from the evil Goa'uld. As I say, I love all of SG-1; but my two favorites are Jack and Daniel. In my reality, they are the dearest, closest of friends. Deeply dependent on that friendship, they are still strong, stubborn individuals. Each strengthens and protects the other; they argue about everything, disagree about everything, and would willingly give their lives for one another -- although like most men, they'd surely die before admitting their feelings. They share secrets without really speaking, with just a look, a smile, a turn of the head, that they would never share with anyone else. Jack and Daniel's relationship is extremely complicated. Jack, with his quirky sense of humor and preference for shooting first and not always bothering to ask questions later, has an inborn distaste for what he calls "geeks" -- people who think too much -- yet it is Daniel's very geekiness, his humanistic approach to life that endears him to Jack. If Jack is the SGC's leading man of action, Daniel is its heart and soul. While he is a man of deep faith, Daniel questions everything he hears and sees, not because he is deliberately defiant, but because he needs to know the rationale behind any proposal. Jack doesn't need to know how a thing works, he just needs to know that it will when he needs it to. Jack reads people's minds, Daniel reads their hearts. Sometimes they misread each other; however, at their most basic level, both men deal in facts and base their judgments, decisions, and actions on what they know to be true, even if that truth is sometimes different for each of them. The nature of my writing is mixed. First of all, I try to remain true to the characters in the Stargate SG-1 series. While some of the storylines go in odd places, Jack and Daniel are who they are in the show. Other people can read into the episodes anything they want, but I see two brave men with strong hearts and strong minds who are totally and eternally dedicated to each other and who are 100% heterosexual. Now that that's out of the way, I do not write science fiction. I simply don't have the skill or the technical expertise to do it. I am by nature and practice a historian; and because none us is ever totally free from our past, I tend explore the backstories of Our Boys. Some of what I write is totally off-the-wall, just for laughs, stupid, or over the top. Then there's the serious stuff -- lots of angst, lots of hurt and comfort, lots of all the stuff that these two characters lend themselves to and what makes them so wonderful to write for. It is my hope that you enjoy what you read. |
